Lukashenko: National Historical Museum should become Belarus’ landmark

The National Historical Museum should become our country’s landmark – as stated by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko at today’s meeting on the architectural solution and concept of the exposition of the National Historical Museum complex

The Head of State indicated that the location of the museum was chosen optimally. According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, its construction will complete the appearance of the district, which has already been labelled by the people as ‘the quarter of the Belarusian statehood’: next to the Palace of Independence, the Supreme Court, and the State Flag Square.

“The museum should become our country’s landmark, delighting both by its modern architectural appearance and interior,” the Belarusian leader noted.

The President noted with regret that Belarus is one of the last states to consider this topic and build a historical museum, “In any self-respecting state, the fundamental museums have long been created so that the new generation would be proud of the path taken by the previous generations. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the architectural solution, which should embody Belarus’ national peculiarity. At the same time, it is necessary to carefully consider the issues of maintenance, operation of the building, and engineering structures…”

The Belarusian leader underlined that it is important to maintain a balance of traditional canons and modern information systems in the museum exhibition, “In short, the museum should use the most cutting-edge technologies. Explore the examples of museums worldwide. We are creating, and we must understand this that this object is being developed for more than one or two years. In the new building of the museum, our descendants will see an example of how to treat the past.”

On behalf of the Head of State, the Minsk City Executive Committee, together with the Culture Ministry and historians, had to work out all these issues. Aleksandr Lukashenko asked to report on the progress of his instruction and underlined, “The museum must be truthful and objective. There should be no politicisation, no glorification of Lukashenko or anyone else who allegedly made history, while the nation is forgotten. Everything should be absolutely objective and deserved! It is necessary to emphasise the special pages of the history of our state; this is natural, we will do it, but these pages must be. There’s no need to hide anything either. This should be a reflection of the policy that we are pursuing in Belarus today.”
