Szijjarto: Ukraine's accession to NATO would lead to world war

The Hungarian government believes that Ukraine's accession to NATO is beyond the red line, as it will mean the beginning of World War III – as stated by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto in his address to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the country’s parliament, TASS reports

The politician noted that the Hungarian government had clearly stated its position on the issue to the leadership and other members of the European Union. "Ukraine's NATO membership is over the red line simply because Ukraine continues to be at war [with Russia]. If Ukraine joined NATO, a world war would break out,” he said.

Mr. Szijjarto also confirmed that Hungary opposes sending European military instructors to Ukraine to train Ukrainian army personnel. "I remember from history that very often bad things started off with military advisers [from other countries] coming to the [conflict] scene, so we do not support this," he said.

In addition, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade recalled that Hungary does not agree with the extension of European sanctions against Russia for a period of three years from the current six months, which would enable the EU and the United States to use the frozen Russian assets to issue a multibillion-Dollar loan to Ukraine. Budapest equally disagrees with attempts to impose a ban on the supply of Russian pipeline gas to Europe on the basis of long-term contracts. "We will not agree to any measures that could significant damage Hungarian economic interests in Europe," Mr. Szijjarto stressed.
