Opinion: Belarus is Russia's most reliable ally

In connection with Belarus’ Independence Day, Yelena Ponomareva, the Doctor of Political Sciences and Professor of Moscow State Institute of International Relations, assessed the nature of Belarus-Russia relations after global changes in the geopolitical situation

Ms. Ponomareva recalled the unprecedented foreign policy and economic pressure that the both countries are experiencing, but – as she stated – crises make it possible to have a fresh look on the closest partners, “The understanding that it is impossible to be without each other usually comes at the most difficult, crisis moments. We felt the shoulder of Belarus after February 2022, naturally, as Belarus felt it in August 2020.”

The expert noted that today, as the situation in the world is developing, attacks in the information and intellectual spheres are enhancing. “That is why we often talk about the proxy war that is being waged [against our countries]. In this sense, the only and the most reliable ally, without exaggeration, is the Republic of Belarus. Here, of course, the special relations developed by the leaders of our states over the years work – as always. I have repeatedly said that there is such a notion in politics as the ‘chemistry of relations’ of leaders. This ‘chemistry’ has once again helped overcome a very difficult crisis. Of course, it is not completely exhausted, and its consequences are still observed. However, it is together that we can overcome them," Ms. Ponomareva concluded.
