Media: waste collectors’ strike drowns Marseilles streets in garbage
Garbage in some areas of Marseilles, the second largest city in France, has not been removed for days due to a waste collectors’ strike. Mountains of trash now clog the streets, RIA Novosti reports.
As France 3 TV channel informed, the staff of a private waste collector company has been on strike for days trying to resolve their conflict with the management. Their complaint is poor working conditions: shortages of manpower and equipment. Footage shown by the channel captures mountains of garbage accumulated on the streets in some areas of the city, including the 3rd and the 14th districts.
On October 29th, municipal authorities had to place a dozen huge garbage containers around the city, so that locals use them instead of the overflowing bins, or sidewalks. They added that they have no power to handle internal conflicts in a private company.
The workers show resolve to continue the strike until their demands are met. The management of the Veolia, the company that handles garbage removal in the area, agreed to consider them and start negotiations.
