The President of Belarus, Chairman of the Belarusian People’s Congress Aleksandr Lukashenko, has been reported today by Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Igor Karpenko. On April 24th, 2024, at a meeting of the 7th Belarusian People’s Congress, the Head of State was elected Chairman of the Belarusian People’s Congress of the seventh convocation by secret ballot by a majority of votes from the full composition of the Belarusian People’s Congress.

“You owe me,” Aleksandr Lukashenko humorously greeted the Chairman of the Central Election Commission.

— Yes. Allow me to complete the mission…

— Do it. I thought you’d already forgotten. I’m already working as a Chairman, but I don’t have a certificate yet.

— In line with the legislation, allow me to present you with the certificate of the Chairman of the Belarusian People’s Congress and, on behalf of the CEC, on my own behalf, wish you strong health and success in serving the Belarusian people.

Further on, the Head of State noted, “I have already looked at the books that you published as a teacher: for children about the Constitution, about elections. That’s a good idea.”

“This is just aimed at those who will vote in 2029-2030,” Igor Karpenko explained.

Continuing the topic of the elections, the Belarusian leader stressed that Belarus is currently in an electoral cycle. We’ve already held a single voting day and the elections to the Belarusian People’s Congress, while the presidential campaign still lies ahead.

“So far, we have passed half the way quite successfully,” the Head of State noted. “God grant that it will be like this till the elections. You propose to determine at least about the presidential elections, when it is better to conduct them. Parliament will make a decision. However, we will discuss some details of these elections, from inviting international observers to working with voters. I’m ready to discuss these issues.”
