Documents submitted to СEС to register initiative group to nominate Olga Chemodanova as Presidential candidate

The documents required for the registration of an initiative group of citizens to collect signatures of voters to support the nomination of Olga Chemodanova as a Presidential candidate have been submitted to Belarus’ Central Election Commission (CEC), BelTA reports

During the discussion of the participation of the Belarusian Women’s Union (BWU) in the election campaign at a meeting of the BWU board, women supported the initiative of Olga Chemodanova, the Chairperson of the Minsk City Organisation of the Belarusian Women’s Union, Head of the Main Department of Ideological Work and Youth Affairs of the Minsk City Executive Committee, to put forward her candidacy as a potential candidate for President of Belarus.

“Women in our country are a driving force in a good creative way. Women are active, visible, not passive, they are represented in all branches of government, public and mass organisations. Therefore, what happened today is quite logical. Of course, we want women among the potential candidates,” Chairperson of the Belarusian Women’s Union Olga Shpilevskaya told journalists.

She is convinced that women should take a constructive approach to what is happening and participate in the election campaign with dignity in order to show that being a woman is constructive. “We know that women have been used in different ways at different times. But we want to show that women are those who work to unite the society, who go forward with a peaceful, creative agenda, who work in line with the state and public policy, who are able to tackle the most important challenges, stand shoulder to shoulder with our best men and work for the benefit of our society. This is a good platform for us to show what we are doing, how much women have done in the country and that we are able to do more,” Ms. Shpilevskaya stressed.

She drew attention to the fact that – in line with the legislation – potential candidates are not nominated by any parties, public associations or organisations, but via collecting signatures of citizens. “That is, in order for a person to have the opportunity [to become a Presidential candidate], they must register an initiative group and collect signatures. Everything will be in accordance with the law,” the Chairperson of the Belarusian Women’s Union assured.

Documents on the registration of an initiative group of citizens to collect signatures in support of the nomination of Olga Chemodanova as a Presidential candidate have been submitted to the CEC.

The election of Belarus’ President is scheduled for January 26th, 2025.
