Volfovich: CSTO welcomes Belarus’ initiatives

On November 28th, Astana hosts a joint meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, the Council of Defence Ministers and the Committee of Secretaries of Security Councils, as well as a session of the CSTO Collective Security Council, attended by CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov and Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff Andrei Serdyukov

Before the meeting, State Secretary of Belarus’ Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich commented to Belarusian journalists that all participants are eager to agree on a large document package that will later be presented to heads of their respective states for approval.

“It is important for Belarus to use this international forum and CSTO’s high standing to make our position on the emergence of the multipolar world, the mutual respect between states, the need to build a transparent Eurasian security architecture heard once again. I see interest and respect from our partners for proposals and initiatives presented by Belarus and our vision of the socio-political environment that surrounds our organisation. The CSTO welcomes them,” Mr. Volfovich said.

Answering the question on how Armenia’s absence could impact the CSTO summit, he explained that, “The Armenian position does not invalidate our document approval procedure. It’s sad not to see one of the CSTO members at our meetings today, but I don’t think that will have any material effect on the documents we are going to approve today and on our format in general.”

At the joint meeting, the sides will exchange views on the military and political situation in the collective security regions, discuss the results of co-operation within the CSTO and prospects for further development of the collective security system. Special attention will be paid to preparations for the joint celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

It is planned that the Kyrgyz Republic will inform on the priorities of its upcoming chairmanship in the Organisation in 2025.
