Opinion: Belarus must be a window to East and Global South within SCO and BRICS formats

Our country is developing ties with 150 countries of the world as much as possible. Taking into account the current sanctions policy of the West, we must further strengthen our sovereignty and independence, being a window to the East and the Global South within the SCO and BRICS formats, as well as a bridge to a new multipolar world. Doctor of Economics, Prof. Natalya Kireenko, who heads the Department of Innovative Development in the Agro-Industrial Complex at the Institute for Professional Development and Retraining of Agribusiness Specialists of the Belarusian State Agrarian Technical University, commented on whether we will be able to maintain these trends in the near future.

“Belarus is an active participant in integration associations. In addition to the Union State, the EAEU and the CIS, we have close co-operation with the SCO and BRICS on our current agenda. We always pursue a balanced foreign policy, and participation in these large integration associations enables us to significantly expand international interaction between the countries. At the same time, the West’s sanctions policy towards Belarus and Russia is not supported by all states of the world. Our republic is interesting as a stable and reliable trading partner that offers high-quality products on the world market and fulfils its obligations under foreign trade contracts. Belarus plans to join the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) this year, and BRICS is the next stage of integration, where we will also be able to prove ourselves and have certain benefits for the national economy,” the expert underlined.
