China’s Hainan Province stimulated green development via systemic innovations

The government of South China’s Hainan Province has accelerated the environmental development of the regional economy by introducing some systemic innovations, Xinhua news agency reports

The publication cites as an example such projects as the carbon-free demonstration zone in Boao – located on the east coast of the island – and the Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve, where mangrove forests and wetlands are located in the city of Haikou: the administrative centre of the region. The news agency also draws attention to a local large-scale project to clean up the marine area from garbage, which involves about 2,000 fishermen and over 500 vessels.

To eliminate the sources of pollution, the provincial authorities have introduced rules restricting the use of plastic items, the waste of which is a significant environmental threat. These measures have affected both trade in the relevant goods and the scope of their application.

Research organisations in China, with the support of the government, are taking carefully thought-out measures to preserve biodiversity on the island. Due to this, e.g., the population of a very rare species of primates – the local gibbons – is gradually growing.

Moreover, an intelligent management platform aimed at responding to climate change has been put into operation on Hainan, enabling to keep statistics and monitor carbon emissions in various industries. On its basis, taking into account the actual data, decisions are quickly made to reduce the level of pollution.
