Lukashenko wouldn’t mind seeing counterweight to UN, including BRICS

In an interview with Izvestia on the side-lines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Belarus’ President Aleksandr Lukashenko said he would not mind seeing a counterweight organisation to the UN, including BRICS, BelTA reports

“Everyone is scared, saying that we are almost creating some kind of organisation as a counterbalance to the UN,” the Belarusian leader noted. “If you are afraid of this counterweight, do not join BRICS. I personally want there to be such a counterbalance, encouraging the UN to work more actively. Or there was a global organisation. After all, BRICS still claims to be a global organisation, not a regional one. This is not SCO (which is regional). I want there to be an organisation that will be a counterweight to the UN,” the President said.

He explained why he is unhappy with the current state of affairs at the UN, “What do we have there? What are we spending money for? Are so many states gathering there just to speak from the rostrum? With an empty hall, mostly… I would like this organisation to be effective, enabling the Security Council to resolve issues, instead of just holding sessions. If Americans don’t like something, they veto, and that’s all.”

The Head of State is confident that issues of war and peace should be settled exclusively at the UN venue. “If the UN has decided to stop the war, this must be done. Is that what it is? No. Americans reproach Russians. Why do you reproach? How many wars have you started and how many conflicts are you fighting today! And how many more wars do you intend to carry out...,” the President of Belarus noted.

As an example of such a US policy, he cited the situation around Taiwan, “They are preparing something, establishing AUKUS [a military-political bloc] in order to intervene and raise tension. That’s why, the UN is not fulfilling its functions.”
