Lukashenko to Iran’s President: I hope our co-operation will be more effective

President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko has held talks with President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian on the side-lines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan

The Head of State thanked his colleague for the opportunity to meet, “I also hope that our co-operation will be more effective. I have such hopes because you are an active person by nature, and by agreeing, we can implement our agreements.”

The Belarusian leader congratulated Masoud Pezeshkian on his convincing and undisputed victory in the presidential election, which neither the US nor its allies were able to challenge. Aleksandr Lukashenko also invited the Iranian leader to visit Belarus at any time convenient for him.

“I also want to thank you for your support in giving us partner status [in BRICS]. We owe you a favour,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

In turn, the Iranian President stressed that BRICS is a strong group of countries, so together we can resist Western sanctions.

Belarus and Iran are implementing a roadmap of comprehensive co-operation between the countries for 2023-2026 and a co-operation programme between the two states’ foreign ministries for 2022-2025.

More than 45 international treaties, 27 of which are interstate and intergovernmental, form the legal framework of the bilateral relations.

In January-August 2024, Belarus-Iran trade stood at $80.8m (128.9 percent against the same period a year earlier) while exports made up $65.2m. The main export items include timber, synthetic fibres, cellulose, and potash fertilisers.
