“We are now partners: this is a mandatory step required to become a full member,” said the Belarusian leader.

Continuing the interview, Aleksandr Lukashenko revealed that he was somewhat surprised by the fact that about 30 countries expressed their desire to join BRICS, while a little over 10 actually got the partner status.

“12 or 13 countries became partners, including Belarus. Why are they not inviting more? What do they have to think over before extending invitations to other nations? Why wasn’t Türkiye invited? It’s the only NATO country that showed interest. A large country with a powerful economy. Why didn’t they invite it? But no. We got this ‘waiting room’ instead in the form of the partner status,” he elaborated.

“All right, so let’s have this [partner status]. But I suspect the bureaucrats who draft these agreements and present them to heads of state, can just bury it all in paperwork. The bureaucracy machine can’t be allowed to swallow all those issues BRICS countries are facing now. That’s what worries me. So all right, we met, showed off, made our speeches, and went our own ways. What about the results?” asked the Belarusian leader.
