India claimed attempts to return diplomacy to Ukraine conflict
India is seeking to bring diplomacy back to the forefront in the conflict in Ukraine – as noted by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, TASS reports
The Indian politician noted that ‘there are two conflicts that are on everyone’s mind’ at the moment, referring to the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“We are trying to do something about both in different ways. The situation [in Ukraine] requires a certain degree of activity or proactive diplomacy. We are trying to do that,” Mr. Jaishankar said.
He clarified that ‘India is making efforts to bring diplomacy back to the forefront’.
“When we started doing this, I suppose there was a certain degree of scepticism, to be honest. I would say that today there is a much more understanding, particularly among Western countries. <...> We have very strong support from the Global South in our endeavours. Therefore, we hope that through many talks we will be able to create some common ground,” the Foreign Minister stressed.
Commenting on what is happening in the Middle East, Mr. Jaishankar noted that the situation is completely different.
“At the moment, efforts are more focused on preventing the conflict from spreading. And here one of the problematic issues is the inability of Iran and Israel to talk to each other directly. So, different countries are trying to see if this problem can be overcome. We are just one of them,” he said.
