EC allowed countries bordering Russia, Belarus to deny migrants asylum
The European Commission has allowed the EU countries bordering Russia and Belarus to refuse asylum requests to migrants at common external borders – as informed by EC Executive Vice President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen, RIA Novosti reports
According to Ms. Virkkunen, the EU member states bordering Russia and Belarus ‘may temporarily restrict the exercise of the right to asylum, but under strict conditions and within legal limits’. “It must be exceptional, temporary, proportionate and for clearly defined cases,” she said.
Earlier, the EC announced the allocation of 170 million Euros for further strengthening of the EU's joint borders with Russia and Belarus. It is expected that additional funds will be used to modernise electronic surveillance equipment, improve telecommunications networks and deploy mobile equipment.
