Algeria urged donor countries to provide humanitarian assistance to Syrians
At a Security Council meeting, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, said that donor countries should help the people of Syria, TASS reports
Amar Benjama noted that ‘the Syrian people should not be abandoned’. Algeria called on donor states to provide humanitarian assistance, and – according to Mr. Bendjama – the country called for a ceasefire throughout the Syrian territory in order to ensure the flow of humanitarian aid.
Mr. Bendjama stressed that, in recent days, more than one million Syrians have been forced to leave their homes. According to him, ‘the return of Syrians to their homes should be voluntary and safe, while no one should be forced to return’.
Algeria is currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
