Belarusian parliamentary mission started work visit to South Africa
A parliamentary mission from Belarus, led by Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko, arrived in South Africa on a work visit, sb.by learned from the House of Representatives’ Secretariat Department on Information and Analysis.
Hon. Djidda Mamar Mahamat, Vice President of the Pan-African Parliament, came to greet Mr. Sergeyenko in the O. R. Tambo International Airport. He informed the House of Representative Chairman on the preparations for the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) session, scheduled to open officially today, November 4th, and on the challenges faced by the organisation.
According to Mr. Djidda, the visit by Belarusian MPs is going to become a starting point for intensifying co-operation between the Republic of Belarus and one of the key governance structures of the African Union.
The Pan-African Parliament is gradually becoming one the most influential organisations in the African Union, with ever-increasing political clout. Co-operation with the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus is supposed to jump-start a new level of political dialogue between Belarus and all nations in the African Union. Both parties emphasised importance of parliamentary diplomacy for developing mutual relations in multiple areas.
As has been reported earlier, responding to an invitation from Hon. Fortune Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament, the Belarusian parliamentary mission led by Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko, plans to visit Midrand city (South Africa) in order to attend the 4th ordinary session of the PAP Sixth Parliament on November 4th and 5th. Signing a memorandum on co-operation between the National Assembly of Belarus and PAP is expected. According to the memorandum, the National Assembly will be granted an observer status at the PAP.
Meetings between Mr. Sergeyenko and top representatives of the PAP, the National Assembly of South Africa, and parliamentary missions from various African countries are also scheduled.
