Belarus’ Federation of Trade Unions elected new Chairman
Yuri Senko was elected as the new Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB) at its 9th (extraordinary) Congress held in Minsk on March 5th. This decision came after Mikhail Orda, who had been leading the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus for the last ten years, was elected a deputy to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly.
Prior to this election, Yuri Senko worked as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the People's Republic of China.
About 300 people from all over the country attended the forum, including the Deputy Head of the President Administration, Igor Lutsky, and the Secretary of the Central Election Commission, Yelena Baldovskaya. The main issue on the agenda of the congress was the election of 80 delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress.
The Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus is a national trade union centre, a republican voluntary independent association of trade unions, their associations, and associated members. It was formed on October 5th-6th, 1990, at the 17th Congress of Trade Unions of Belarus, which declared itself the First Congress of the FTUB and adopted the Charter of the federation. It is the legal successor of the Belarusian Republican Council of Trade Unions. The FTUB carries out its activities throughout the country, promotes the development of Belarus as a democratic social state governed by the rule of law. It unites 15 branch trade unions, 6 regional and Minsk city trade union associations, as well as 137 district and city trade union associations. The number of trade union members is more than 4m people.
