Zakharova congratulated Belarusians on anniversary of Brest’s liberation from Nazi invaders

On July 28th, 1944, the Red Army troops liberated Brest, completing more than three years of the BSSR occupation by the Nazis. The victory near Brest had great symbolic, moral and political significance – as stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

According to the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the liberation of Brest contributed to the success of the Lublin-Brest offensive operation, which ended with the expulsion of the enemy from the territory of the BSSR.

“The immortal feat of the heroes, defenders of the Brest Fortress, who were the first to take the hit of the Nazi troops and became another example of courage and perseverance for all Soviet people, will forever remain in our memory. In this regard, it is symbolic that it was in Brest that the final point was set in the more than three-year fascist occupation of Belarus,” Maria Zakharova said.

She also noted that the battles for the Brest Fortress were fought twice in the history of the Great Patriotic War: during the defence of the citadel in 1941 and during the liberation of the regional centre in 1944. And the battles for the fortress should also be glorified twice in history as a symbol of our shared memory.

“The spiritual unity of our fraternal peoples, faith in the power of truth and our own strength, as well as a reverent attitude to preserving historical memory, enable us today to successfully overcome any trials and give a firm rebuff to the heirs of Napoleon and Hitler who are trying to raise their heads. Let me sincerely congratulate the fraternal Belarusian people on this significant date, and wish them happiness, prosperity, and a peaceful sky above their heads. I bow low for preserving our shared memory,” Maria Zakharova concluded.
