WHO identified 17 pathogens requiring priority development of new vaccines
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has compiled a list of 17 pathogens for which new vaccines are urgently needed as they frequently cause disease, TASS reports
It is reported that in the WHO study, pathogens are named as top priorities for new vaccine development. The study is ‘the first global effort to systematically prioritise endemic pathogens based on criteria that include regional disease burden, antimicrobial resistance risk and socio-economic impact’.
The study reconfirms longstanding priorities for vaccine research and development (R&D), including for HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis – three diseases that collectively take nearly 2.5 million lives each year. Pathogens such as Group A streptococcus and Klebsiella pneumonia have been identified by experts as ‘top disease control priorities in all regions’.
