In May 2024, Iran expressed its intention to become an observer at EAEU. This status is granted to a state interested in mutually beneficial trade and economic co-operation with the Eurasian Economic Union and its members and in the convergence of legal regulation.

The EEC analysed the interaction of the EAEU countries with Iran regarding the economic feasibility of granting the latter the status of an observer state and sent Iran a response about its interest in considering its official appeal. That was done in October 2024 and was agreed upon by all parties.

The final decision on granting Iran an observer status was made by the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.

Representatives of an observer country have the right to participate, by invitation, in meetings of the EAEU bodies and summits at the level of heads of state and government. Currently, Cuba and Uzbekistan also have an observer status at EAEU.

A free trade agreement has also been signed between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union.
