Volfovich on nuclear weapons in Belarus: I think it will not come to nuclear warfare
State Secretary of Belarus’ Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich told journalists in Moscow that he believes that things will not go so far that the nuclear weapons, which are supposed to be deployed in Belarus, will have to be used, BelTA reports
When asked when nuclear warheads will be delivered to Belarus, he replied, “When our leaders, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Belarus, make a decision. This is their decision.”
“It doesn’t matter in what quantity. The main thing is in what capacity and how to use them correctly. We know how to use them. Will it be necessary to use them?.. I don’t think it will come to nuclear warfare. Still, warheads and other ammunition of tactical or strategic nuclear weapons are primarily intended to prevent, to ensure the security of both Russia and Belarus,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.
Answering a clarifying question about where the warheads will be placed (Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov said earlier about Belarus’ western borders), the State Secretary of the Security Council said, “Belarus is the western outpost of the Union State. It is not necessary to place them near the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. They can be placed anywhere. The distance and length of Belarus is 600km, enabling us to place them anywhere. There are a lot of such places. On the territory of Belarus, when there was a Belarusian military district [during the USSR times], there were more than 43 points for the deployment of nuclear weapons. Our President said that they had been all preserved.”
