US national debt increased by $500bn in just a few weeks
In less than a month, the national debt of the United States of America reached $33.5 trillion – up $500bn, according to the US Department of the Treasury, TASS reports
Back in September, the US Department of the Treasury announced that the government debt had crossed the $33 trillion mark, breaking the previous record. In July, the debt stood at $32 trillion. The Finance Ministry already estimates the October debt at $33.513 trillion.
“In January, the US government debt ceiling, set at $31.4 trillion, was exceeded. After this, the country’s Finance Ministry was forced to use emergency measures to continue its financial operations,” the material reads.
The current situation has led the White House administration to call on Congress to raise the debt limit. Republicans agreed with the proposal, but on the condition of budget cuts.
