UNCTAD welcomes Belarus’ contribution to global food security
Unilateral coercive measures led to a decline in international trade, provoking a global food crisis. In this regard, the UN Conference on Trade and Development should pay attention to a systematic assessment of the impact of illegal Western economic sanctions on the efforts made by states to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals – as stated by Belarus’ Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Ambrazevich during a meeting with Secretary General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebeca Grynspan.
The Belarusian diplomat highly appreciated the work carried out by the Secretary General to revitalise the UNCTAD activities, expressing gratitude to the organisation’s leadership and secretariat for fruitful co-operation with Belarus in the field of investment, competition and consumer protection, as well as e-commerce. He also confirmed Belarus’ demand for UNCTAD technical and expert assistance in the field of sustainable economic development and related issues of trade, finance, and technology.
Yuri Ambrazevich stressed Belarus’ readiness for joint efforts with UNCTAD and other UN specialised agencies to reduce the threat of global famine by providing access to Belarusian fertilisers for the most vulnerable countries.
“The Secretary General positively assessed Belarus’ readiness to contribute to the effective activities of UNCTAD and, in particular, to the efforts of the organisation to ensure global food security,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry’s press service noted.
As part of the Deputy Foreign Minister’s visit to Geneva to participate in high-level events, the Belarusian diplomat also met with Director General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Gilbert Houngbo. The conversation was devoted to discussing the prospects for co-operation between the Republic of Belarus and the ILO on the development of a tripartite dialogue (employee-employer-government).
