UN issued ‘red alert’ as 2023 was Earth’s hottest year on record
All major global climate records were broken last year, according to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Reuters reports
WMO Head expressed particular concern about ocean warming and shrinking sea ice.
“The UN weather agency said in its annual State of the Global Climate report that average temperatures hit the highest level in 174 years of record-keeping by a clear margin, reaching 1.45 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels,” the publication reads.
Ocean temperatures also reached their highest temperature in 65 years of data, according to the WMO. More than 90 percent of seas experienced heatwaves throughout the year, wreaking havoc on food systems.
