UN: 55 armed conflicts taking place around the globe
The United States informed that fifty-five active armed conflicts in different regions of the world cause humanitarian crises and pose a potential threat of escalation, TASS reports
As noted by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, speaking in Geneva at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, ‘55 conflicts are raging in the world’. “Widespread violations of international humanitarian law and human rights have a devastating impact on millions of civilians. Population displacement and humanitarian crises have already reached unprecedented proportions, and all these conflicts have regional and global consequences," Mr. Turk added.
The UN official noted that humanity rarely faced so many escalating crises. He also warned that emergencies that overlap with each other increase the risk of conflict escalation. “The war in the Gaza Strip has explosive consequences for the entire Middle East. Conflicts in other regions, including the Horn of Africa, Sudan and the Sahel, may also escalate dramatically. The growing militarisation of the Korean peninsula increases the threat level as well,” he said.
Mr. Turk also recalled ‘the worsening security crisis in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’ and ‘the attacks in the Red and Black seas, creating shocks for global transportation of goods’.
