Tertel on how tension was growing on Belarus’ southern border

In June, elite units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, the police of Kiev and a number of regional centres were being transferred to the border areas of Belarus in several directions – as informed by Chairman of the State Security Committee Ivan Tertel, commenting on the results of a meeting with the Commander-in-Chief on ensuring the country's military security in the southern operational area

Mr. Tertel noted that the overall situation in the world and the region remains tense, “In these circumstances, the Head of State has given instructions to the foreign intelligence agencies to monitor the situation, and the primary task is to prevent the formation of sudden threats to the Republic of Belarus in various spheres and to work out appropriate response measures.”

Foreign intelligence regularly reports to the Head of State its assessments of the situation and various points on which the President makes appropriate decisions. According to the KGB Chief, somewhere on June 18th, foreign intelligence revealed a serious concentration of the contingent of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas bordering the Republic of Belarus. “In several directions, we noted the transfer of elite units of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the police from the city of Kiev and some other regional centres directly to the border areas of the Republic of Belarus,” Mr. Tertel said.
