Sweden to expand support for WHO in 2023

The announced 180 million crowns are a voluntary donation from Sweden, which will go to WHO in addition to the annual membership fee. Stockholm has also long been a vocal advocate for more sustainable funding for the WHO, calling on other states to increase their support for the organisation.

The head of the department, Johan Forssell, believes that increased support is necessary against the backdrop of ‘large-scale humanitarian and health-related crises’.

In turn, Swedish Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed recalled that ‘half of the world’s inhabitants do not have access to clean drinking water and sanitation’ and that ‘climate change and conflicts increase the risk of the spread of diseases and infections and pose a serious threat to human health’.
