Supreme Court: no complaints received concerning Presidential election in Belarus
Belarus’ Supreme Court received no complaints concerning the upcoming Presidential election, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court Valery Kalinkovich told reporters at the meeting between the CIS observer mission representatives and the Supreme Court judges on January 9th
Mr. Kalinkovich said the meeting was focused on practical matters related to Belarusian electoral law practices, on the role and the place of court competences in electoral processes, and practical interactions and exchanges of information required for both observers and judicial authorities.
“As for the judicial branch per se, courts are authorised to settle electoral law complaints and disputes related to key features of the electoral campaign. We’ve received no complaints of that sort during the current campaign so far,” said the judge.
In his opinion, that serves as proof both that Belarus’ electoral law is clear and detailed enough for those who are covered by it and using it at the moment, and that all electoral processes in the course of the current Presidential campaign are taking place within the confines of the law to a sufficient extent.
