On May 16th, Belarusian border guards found a dead elk just two metres from the Lithuanian dangerous barrier. The animal tried to cross into Lithuanian territory, but died because of wounds caused by the barbed wire.

According to the State Border Committee, 24 wild animals, including 15 elk, eight roe deer and one deer, have died on the Lithuanian border after the dangerous barriers were installed by Belarus’ neighbours.

In total, since September 2021, the Belarusian side has recorded 41 cases of animal deaths due to the border fences of Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.

“The Western media still remains silent about the obvious deliberate damage to the flora and fauna,” the State Border Committee noted.
