Senators approve law on strengthening support for war veterans

Today, October 22nd, the Council of the Republic approved the draft law of the Republic of Belarus on amendments to veteran laws. The new provisions are focused on improving legal regulations when it comes to legality and measures taken to provide social support to war veterans and victims of the war.

Major new legal developments include defining the Great Patriotic War participant status and providing social guarantees to war veterans – holders of USSR awards for flawless combat or rear service, as well as those who served in special units involved in demining territories and facilities liberated from the German occupation in 1943-1945. Some categories of the Great Patriotic War participants will have their pension supplements increased. Social support measures will be expanded for former prisoners of concentration camps and other places of forced imprisonment.

Benefits for veterans of armed conflicts and families of servicemen killed on duty will also strengthen. Individuals who used to work as service personnel for the USSR Army contingents abroad, as well as those sent to Afghanistan during the period from December 1979 to December 1989 will get pension supplements. The list of persons with priority rights to healthcare services and scheduled in-patient treatment is set to grow as well.
