Sandu: votes bought for long time at Moldovan elections
Moldovan President Maia Sandu said at the country's Supreme Security Council meeting that votes in elections have been bought for a decade, RIA Novosti reports
A meeting of the Supreme Security Council was held in Moldova under the leadership of Maia Sandu, focusing on the issues of ‘the phenomenon of political corruption’ – and voter bribery, in particular.
“I would like to note that a criminal group engaged in buying votes in elections has been operating in Moldova for at least ten years. We see this, and it involves the illegal financing of parties and election campaigns, as well as attempts to buy votes in recent years," the President said.
During the briefing, the Moldova leader recalled that cases of attempts to buy votes were recorded more than a year ago in the elections in the Gagauz autonomy and in local elections in 2023. As she noted, the actions of the justice authorities at that time ‘were inadequate’ and did not lead to punishment of the perpetrators. According to Maia Sandu, such actions threaten the country's democracy.
