Psychologist talks about what drives people to self-harm

Self-harm is a complex, painful phenomenon that can stem from different causes and motives. Often, it hides deep internal problems that require care and understanding. Viktoria Sorokina, clinical psychologist, Candidate of Psychological Sciences, talked to sb.by about the key factors that can push a person towards that path.

1. Emotional pain

Many people who engage in self-harm are trying to handle their emotional pain and stress. Physical pain for them is a way to relieve tension, a temporary release that distracts them from their negative thoughts and feelings.

2. Guilt and shame

Guilt or deep shame brought in by past mistakes often lead to self-harm. The person might think they deserve to be punished for their actions, and harm themselves in the way of retribution.

3. Self-perception issues

Some people are unable to perceive themselves in a way that’s too positive, so self-harm for them is a way to express their dissatisfaction with themselves. That could be related to low self-esteem, or dysfunctional ideas about themselves.

4. Looking for control

In times of crisis or uncertainty, when an individual feels that their life is spiralling out of control, self-harm could become one of the few ways for them to find balance again.

5. Communicating your pain

For some people, self-harm is a way to signal to the world that they are suffering. It can be a cry for help.
