Protests over Spanish authorities’ flood response interrupted King’s visit to Valencia suburb
On November 3rd, hundreds of residents of the Valencia suburb affected by deadly floods last week protested during the visit of King Felipe VI of Spain, Queen Letizia and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, with some even throwing mud at them, Reuters reports
Chanting ‘Murderers, murderers!’, local residents expressed dissatisfaction with the belated, in their opinion, warning of the danger of flooding on October 29th, and then a late response by the emergency services when disaster struck.
“Online footage showed the king’s wife, Letizia, crying as she hugged some residents. Her hair and face had traces of mud and one of her bodyguards had blood on his face, apparently from a hurled object,” the article says.
On November 3rd, the death toll from the worst flood in the country’s modern history rose to 217 people — almost all in the Valencia region.
