In her talk with the Belarus 1 TV channel, Natalya Eismont, the press secretary of the President of Belarus, answered the question whether Aleksandr Lukashenko will run for the President next year
Ms. Eismont was asked whether it is possible to perceive Aleksandr Lukashenko’s earlier statement as an intention to participate in the upcoming presidential elections. The President’s spokesperson noted that after the words of the Belarusian leader, many may have indulged in wishful thinking.
“This is perfectly understandable, and it’s not bad. I will answer this question like this: we really want this. Moreover, I will even say somewhat sharply, we insist that it be so. I use ‘we’ in the broadest sense of the word. Of course, these are not only those who work with the President, not only all of you, journalists, all of our people. There are millions of us, it’s true. We insist on him running for re-election, but the decision, of course, is up to the President. As always happens, at the right moment – when he makes this decision and when he deems it necessary – he will announce it himself,” the President’s press secretary stressed.
