Portuguese politician: no sanctions will prevent preservation of our relations with Belarus

Belarus does not deserve such a hostile attitude from European countries – as stated by Matheus Alves Jose Angelo, a member of the Political Commission of the Central Committee of the Portuguese Communist Party, at a meeting with Belarusian deputies

In turn, Belarus’ MP Sergei Klishevich noted that the Portuguese politician had to overcome a rather difficult path in order to get to Belarus and support it in the anti-fascist struggle. “We are the bulwark of peace, creation and struggle for historical truth – and this is a really recognised fact today. All progressive forces (there are quite many of them in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe) understand this and are ready to work with us. Belarus stands on the side of a just world order, when there is no unipolar world with one state determining the life of others,” he said.

Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Matheus Alves Jose Angelo noted that the Portuguese Communists have been co-operating with the Communist Party of Belarus for a long time, “For me personally, there was no need to come to Belarus to find out how things are here. This visit will just deepen the knowledge about your country. The state of affairs described in the European media, in particular in Portugal, fundamentally differs from the real life in Belarus. This is done to achieve certain goals: to hinder the economic and social development of your country and prevent your people from choosing their own future and their own path of economic and political development.”

As noted by the politician, his visit to Belarus had two main goals, “Firstly, to prove that no sanctions, no lies and barriers will prevent the preservation and maintenance of our relations. This applies both to the relations between our parties and between our peoples. Belarus has become a victim of the hostile policy of its neighbours, and we want to support the people of Belarus.”

The parties discussed inter-parliamentary co-operation between the two countries, as well as issues of countering the ongoing attempts of collective West to pressure Belarus.
