Political analyst: Belarus showed there’s no need to be afraid of Western sanctions

Belarus has shown that one should not be afraid of Western sanctions and external pressure, one should continue to stand one’s ground – as noted by Farhad Ibragimov, a political scientist and lecturer at the Faculty of Economics Department of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), in his talk with Belarus 1 TV channel

“From the very beginning, under the leadership of President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Belarus positioned itself as a state that proceeds primarily from its national interests. In this case, Belarus has demonstrated with the help of this model that there is no need to be afraid of Western sanctions or external pressure, and we must continue to stand on our own ground,” Farhad Ibragimov said. “Yes, politics is the art of compromise, as Russian President Vladimir Putin said the other day. And Minsk has been compromising for a very long time, trying to establish relations with the West. But what did we see in return? The West just got impudent, rude, really perceived Minsk’s good-naturedness and its benevolence to establish relations almost as a weakness. They demonstrated the same behaviour towards Russia.”

According to the expert, the result was that everyone saw the complete degradation of relations between Belarus and Russia with the West.

“Belarus, by diversifying its relations on the external track and developing its relations with the Global South, has shown that the world is much more multifaceted, it is not limited to the West alone. There is a huge number of continents, regions, where we are welcome, which want to develop relations. Belarus has defined its vector in this case,” Farhad Ibragimov added.
