Ostrovsky on Belarusian-made bioprosthetic heart valves: it’s a very important, much needed project

The II Innovation Cardiology International Congress brought together cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, endovascular surgeons, doctors specialising in ultrasound and functional diagnostics, and other experts. The new Belarusian project, the bioprosthetic heart valve, drew interest from Russian clinicians. Yuri Ostrovsky, Deputy Director for Innovative Development and High Technology of the Cardiology RSPC, said the prostheses have already passed clinical trials, and can be used by surgeons in Belarus starting next year.

“Bioprosthetics are extremely important, because generally, they are used in senior patients. As for mechanical valves, we’ve been making them since 1993,” he explained.

The congress’ agenda included satellite symposiums and start-up discussions. Experts reviewed possibilities for information technologies and artificial intelligence use in cardiology. Mr. Ostrovsky also shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence. He believes the key thing it needs is a joint database with tens, or hundreds of thousands of tests that can retrieve data in real time.

“In my opinion, artificial intelligence is a function that reviews test data and makes suggestions for the doctor. We’re not talking about replacing medical education, or professional capabilities. The clinician is the one to make a decision anyway,” the expert said.
