Opinion: US main task is to drive wedge in China-Russia relations
There will always be those in the US who want to renew the strategic partnership with China – as noted by Yuri Shevtsov, the Director of the European Integration Centre, during his talk with Alfa Radio, when commenting on the forthcoming visit of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to Beijing
The political expert noted that today the main task of the United States is to drive a wedge in relations between China and Russia, “The Americans have been successfully doing it for many decades. The rise of China, when the country moved to reforms, is a consequence of the fact that between China and the United States a strategic partnership has emerged since 1969. It was anti-Soviet, and then – anti-Russian. Today, this partnership is a thing of the past. But it was it that at one time ensured the opening of the US market for goods from China. There will always be a strong movement in the United States that aims to renew such a partnership, as well as to drive a wedge between China and Russia.”
Yuri Shevtsov is convinced that the divergence between China and the United States is systemic, and until the Americans return to a deep mutual partnership, they are unlikely to change anything in relations with China.
Earlier it became known that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Beijing on February 5th-6th. During the visit, the Head of the US Department of State will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. It is noted that the parties will discuss the conflict in Ukraine, Beijing’s nuclear arsenal, the joint fight against drug trafficking and the possible return of Americans in custody in China to their homeland.
It is also expected that the US Secretary of State will raise the issue of restoring contacts between Washington and Beijing in the military sphere, frozen after the visit to Taiwan in August last year by Nancy Pelosi, who at that time was the Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
