Opinion: thanks to Lukashenko's policy, Belarus ensured its food security

The President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, has developed a number of economic sectors in the country over the years of his rule, while preserving and increasing the existing potential. This has enabled Belarus to become a competitive player in international markets and to provide its citizens with food. In his talk with Alfa Radio, political scientist Vadim Borovik shared his views.

Mr. Borovik explained what all Belarusians should understand these days, “Aleksandr Lukashenko’s being in power has always been our competitive advantage. During his time as Head of State, he has created the latest industries [of the economy] in the country: nuclear industry, bio- and information technology. He has not simply preserved the industrial potential of Belarus, but also updated it. While many suggested to the President to get away from agricultural production and distribute everything among farmers, saying that we would not be able to compete in international markets, he was sure that this is the way the country should go, develop commodity production, and preserve its industry. Thanks [to such a policy of the President], Belarus has ensured its complete food security.”

“Our country is headed by the man with exceptional political flair and powerful potential,” the expert stressed, adding, “Aleksandr Lukashenko's approaches to [fighting] COVID-19 were criticised, and virtually the whole world was against Belarus! He said then: we will continue working. He said: if we do not deal with agriculture and production issues today, then we will have nothing to eat tomorrow. He was right!”

As noted by Mr. Borovik, the Belarusian leader once objectively predicted the development potential of China. “Look: it is the number one country in the world today. Remember what problems were predicted for us because of our construction of a nuclear power plant. We were told that it poses a threat to national security, that country would face an environmental collapse, and that no one actually needs it. Meanwhile, we see now that the EU countries are reactivating their nuclear power facilities,” the expert added.

Mr. Borovik summed up, “The work that Aleksandr Lukashenko has done during his presidency and will do further is a contribution for many decades to come. It is a serious groundwork for the country’s development."
