Opinion: Poland’s active militarisation forces Belarus to take proactive measures
Poland is feverishly militarising its eastern border – building bunkers and anti-tank barriers, preparing minefields and other military infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Polish media are reporting on a new stage of ‘improving the security’ of borders in the east: the country’s so-called Eastern Shield is to be implemented by 2028, and the plan includes, among other things, the creation of a satellite control system in space, physical barriers and other structures on land, as well as the active use of drones. Military expert Aleksandr Tikhansky has commented on the developing situation.
“This also seems insufficient to the Polish authorities, and President Andrzej Duda said that the country is ready to deploy nuclear weapons to strengthen the security of NATO's eastern flank, if the allies make an appropriate decision. According to the Polish leader, this issue has been repeatedly discussed in negotiations with the United States (at the US initiative). Apparently, just being a NATO member is no longer enough for Warsaw. Why is this developing then? Such militarisation makes Poland one of the most militarily powerful European countries, and the deployment of American nuclear weapons will add a political strength to it. As a result, the United States will get a new powerful ally overseas — as opposed to Germany and France – but it will be more obedient than Berlin and Paris, which is also important. Militarisation is in full swing, and we cannot but get concerned about it. Endless exercises, modernisation of infrastructure, plans to extend the armed forces, large-scale updating of equipment with an emphasis on modern models force Belarus to take proactive measures," the military expert noted.
