Opinion: Belarus is on the right path in its resistance to Western sanctions

Western countries continue to put pressure on Belarus through sanctions, but the state is making every effort to prevent their impact on ordinary people’s lives. According to a deputy of the House of Representatives, Sergei Klishevich, such a policy should be pursued further, since it has proven its effectiveness.

In his talk with Alfa Radio, Mr. Klishevich stressed that the introduction of sanctions had not actually changed people’s daily life. “Despite an enormous political, economic and diplomatic pressure from the West, Belarusians have not actually experienced great changes – and this is a huge merit of our Government and, first of all, President Aleksandr Lukashenko, the policy that has been carried out in the country for many years. We are moving along the right track, and it needs to be methodically, purposefully, carefully, and somewhere fiercely defended," he said.

Mr. Klishevich added that some persons from abroad are calling for tougher sanctions against Belarus, but these efforts are futile. “[Fugitives] are putting their hands into Belarusians’ pockets, urging to expand sanctions against our country, trying to steal people’s money and future. However, they fail to succeed, because there is a reliable defence: this is our President, Government and all those who are doing their jobs, ensuring the country’s socio-economic well–being,” he stressed.
