New President of Georgia took the oath

Mikheil Kavelashvili has officially become the new President of Georgia after the inauguration ceremony that took place at the national Parliament and was broadcast online at its website, RIA Novosti reports

After Kavelashvili recited the oath, all in attendance listened to the national anthem.

The inauguration put an end to Salome Zourabichvili’s term in the office. As per her earlier statements, she had no intention to relinquish her powers after their expiration on December 29th. Zourabichvili also said that ‘there could be no legitimate Presidential election under an illegitimate Parliament’ and declared herself the only legitimate authority in Georgia.

“In response, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said if Zourabichvili refuses to leave the official Presidential quarters, she can be expelled out of there by force and arrested. A person who illegally occupies a public or government building is subject to prison time under the Georgian law. Kobakhidze expressed hope it doesn’t come to the forceful removal of Salome Zourabichvili from the residence and that she leaves it on her own,” the news agency stated.

Later reports indicated that Zourabichvili did leave the Presidential residence and joined the protestors. Anticipating that, the opposition moved their ranks from the residence to the Parliament building, blocking the nearby Rustaveli Avenue.
