NASA delayed Starliner crew’s return to Earth to at least March 2025

American astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams who went to the International Space Station (ISS) back in June as the first manned Boeing Starliner flight crew will see Earth again no earlier than March 2025, TASS reports

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released a statement saying that, “Crew-10 [mission] now is targeting no earlier than late March 2025 to launch four crew members to the International Space Station […] Crew-9 mission with NASA astronauts Nick Hague, Suni Williams, Butch Wilmore, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov will return to Earth following the arrival of Crew-10 to the orbital laboratory. Known as a handover period, it allows Crew-9 to share any lessons learned with the newly arrived crew.”

The Boeing Corporation launched Boeing Starliner on June 5th. The spacecraft’s first manned mission included astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. They were originally supposed to stay onboard the ISS for 8 days and return to Earth on June 14, but the spacecraft malfunction left them stranded there first till June 26th and later indefinitely.

NASA decided to use the Crew Dragon spacecraft to bring the Starliner crew back to Earth. To be able to do that, they had to reduce the number of astronauts launched to the ISS with Crew-9 in September by half.
