Modi: India to become global semiconductor manufacturing hub
India will become a global semiconductor manufacturing hub and move even closer to achieving technological independence – as stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his X account, TASS reports
The Prime Minister of India said that, after the government approved the construction of three semiconductor manufacturing plants, the country will move even further towards technological independence. "It will also ensure India's transformation into a global semiconductor manufacturing centre," he emphasised.
On February 29th, the Indian government approved the construction of three semiconductor manufacturing and assembly plants in the country with an investment of $15.2bn. The first plant will be built in Gujarat by Tata and Powerchip Taiwan to produce high-performance microchips of 28 nanometre technology, as well as power supply control chips for various fields, including defence and production of electric vehicles. The second plant will be built in Assam by one of the companies of the Tata conglomerate in co-operation with the Indian Test Pvt. Ltd. (TSAT). The production will include the assembly and testing of microchips. A similar production facility in Sanand (Gujarat) will be set up by Indian CG Power together with Japanese Renesas Electronics Corporation and Thai Stars Microelectronics. They will produce microchips for the automotive industry, energy sector, consumer and industrial use.
The Indian authorities expect to create their own semiconductor manufacturing industry in the country. To this end, the government actively attracts foreign companies, creating favourable conditions, including through financial incentives.
