According to The Telegraph, more than 15,000 people left the army in October, more than half of them choosing to leave of their own accord, despite a 6 percent pay rise – a record for 22 years. The forces recruited just over 12,000 personnel in the same period. The publication stresses that the salaries of privates in the army increased by 1.9 percent since 2011, while the salaries of new junior doctors rose by 13.39 percent over the same period, while those of train drivers grew by 10.14 percent.

According to a survey conducted before the salary increase, only 32 percent of servicemen were satisfied with their level.

Earlier, UK Deputy Defence Secretary Alistair Carns said the British army could be ‘expended’ in as little as six months if it participated in a high-intensity conflict.

The British Army now stands at 72,500 troops – the lowest number since the Napoleonic Wars. In 2025, according to The Times, it could fall below 70,000 because of low recruitment rates and the dismissal of serving personnel due to dissatisfaction with conditions of service.
