Media: some US states have firearm death rates higher than countries in conflict
The firearm death rates in a number of US states are higher than in some countries prone to armed conflicts and clashes of criminal gangs, TASS reports with reference to The Washington Post
The newspaper refers to a report by the Commonwealth Fund (an American organisation) which notes that Mississippi’s firearm-related violence rate nearly double that of Haiti, which is plagued by political and gang strife.
In addition, states such as Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama have higher firearm mortality rates than Mexico, where clashes between rival drug cartels occur. It is also emphasised that the death rate from shooting in Montana is higher than in Colombia, where drug trafficking is rampant.
The Washington Post notes that the death rate from firearms in the states of Wyoming, Arizona and Oklahoma is higher than in Brazil. Suburban New Jersey had a higher gun death rate than Nicaragua, Mali and Djibouti, the article says.
