Media: EC exploring possibility of creating migrant centres outside EU
Brussels is exploring the possibility of opening deportation centres outside the European Union to send illegal migrants there, TASS reports with reference to the Spanish El País newspaper
According to the publication, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent a letter to the EU leaders ahead of the summit in Brussels, which will also tackle the issue of immigration.
“We should also continue to explore possible ways forward as regards the idea of developing return hubs outside the EU,” the letter reads.
The newspaper notes that most EU states demand to tighten the rules governing the expulsion of illegal migrants. Moreover, a number of countries have asked to accelerate the entry into force of the directives of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. It is reported that the main barrier to the idea of creating deportation centres is to determine their locations, with some countries advocating to put pressure on the Balkan States that are seeking EU membership.
