Malaysia explained desire to join BRICS by economic power of participating countries

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said that the country would like to join BRICS because of the economic power of its member states, TASS reports

Mohamad Hasan said that BRICS is an informal bloc that does not require Malaysia to sign any agreements. According to him, the country views this association as ‘a good platform for Malaysia, since the population of the BRICS members exceeds 2 billion people, and its GDP is larger than ASEAN’s combined GDP’. Therefore, as noted by Mr. Hasan, Malaysia is interested in joining BRICS.

The Foreign Minister added that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would discuss, if necessary, whether its members can join BRICS.
