Lukashenko on implementation of Paris Agreement: no progress seen so far
Countries that should be particularly concerned with emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere neglect this issue – as stated by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko in an interview with AnewZ TV channel (COP29 main partner in Azerbaijan)
In order to combat climate change and its negative consequences, the Paris Agreement was adopted as part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change on December 12th, 2015. The agreement, which entered into force less than a year later, aims to significantly reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and limit the increase in global temperature this century to 2 degrees Celsius, while seeking means to further limit this increase to 1.5 degrees. To date, 195 countries and the EU have joined the Paris Agreement.
“Do you think the 1.5-degree target is achievable? Are the countries doing enough to achieve it?” the journalists asked Aleksandr Lukashenko, and he gave a straight answer, “If we continue acting in the current manner, then it can hardly be achievable. Nothing is changing, and it is even getting worse. The countries that should primarily deal with reducing emissions are, unfortunately, not doing that. There is no progress seen in this regard. Therefore, the question arises about the effectiveness of such measures. I think they are ineffectual.”
