Welcoming the guest, the Head of State drew attention to the fact that it was their first personal meeting, and the reason for it was wonderful. On October 15th, Aleksandr Lukashenko signed an order expressing gratitude to Valery Limarenko for his high professionalism and significant contribution to the implementation of the investment project for the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. In 2007-2018, Valery Limarenko headed the Nizhny Novgorod Engineering Company Atomenergoproekt and personally supervised the work on preparations for the construction of the first power unit of the Belarusian NPP, participated in the development of an intergovernmental agreement between Belarus and Russia on co-operation in the construction of a nuclear power plant and a general contract for its construction.

The President thanked the Russian Governor for his contribution to the implementation of this strategic investment project and the strengthening of Belarusian-Russian co-operation, “You are more than our man. You can hardly imagine what we had in mind when we decided to build a nuclear power plant. The station turned out to be good, and it operates without problems. Today we are already thinking over the second nuclear power plant, deciding on whether to build it or not. I think the future relies on electricity – and, especially, nuclear energy. Therefore, we are now seriously pondering over the construction of our second nuclear power plant.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that Valery Limarenko had come to Belarus as the head of a large Russian region that is very interesting and close to Belarus. “In general, the contribution of the Far Eastern regions to the Belarus-Russia trade turnover makes less than a percent: about $350m. The figure is modest, but the volumes are enormous: $350m indicate good volumes, if the distance between our entities is taken into account. Of course, given our capabilities, this is not enough, but I think we will enter into more serious co-operation following the results of your work and negotiations in Belarus.”
